Soul of the City grant: Art and Garden Come Together Aug 9th event

Here is the posting from last night on our Facebook site. Sorry it didn't make it to the blog yesterday!
---------
What an incredible day mural painting on the road and block party.

Thank you to the amazing volunteers from the Acadia Community Garden and Art Society and the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour and the Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative - you made the event! You set up, you helped out and you tore down. Somewhere in all of that, I sure hope you had time for a burger, painting the mural and fun and games! What a partnership this was!

Thank you to Sylvia Prochownik, pavement mural artist, for bringing to life the amazing mural with the help of our incredibly talented Acadia community folks of all ages.

A special shout out to Julie Sumner and Andy Poldaas, and Noel and Catherine James, for being incredible support team to Sylvia. From gridding, mixing paint, guiding and helping painters, they went above and beyond to help Sylvia and the community create Sylvia's vision on the pavement.

Thank you to The Calgary Foundation and Calgary Economic Development for the generous Soul of the City Neighbours Grant! Thank you for believing in us and our vision for this incredible day.

Thank you to Viviana and Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative,
Calgary Parks and Recreation, Calgary Roads, and everyone else at the City of Calgary that helped us, held our hand as we learned the ropes of how to do a mural and block party and answered our myriad of questions. This City rocks! All the staff involved from the City of Calgary did everything they could to help us make this happen. Thank you!

Thank you to all our Sponsors and Supporters and Special Guests- they came, they chatted, they painted, they donated, they discounted, they accomodated, and made the event event more special...

Acadia's own fabulous Firemen, Garry Deckert - Captain and Crew and the awesome Fire Engine and Constable Josh Young and his police car. These fine people keep our community safe and were so kind to come out and chat with the community, and paint on the mural and be an integral part of the festivities. We are so lucky to have you looking out for us in Acadia.

Our MLA, Justice Minister, Hon. Jonathan Denis took the time to stopped by and chatted with the community and even painted on the mural too!

Julie Black, The Calgary Foundation, came out for a visit and spoke at our opening ceremonies. It was so good to share our event with her. Without the Calgary Foundations funding, and Julie's amazing background support - this day would not happen.

Janet Melrose, the Calgary Horticultural Society dropped by for a visit and is writing an article for the Calgary Herald about our event. Janet was instrumental in helping us learn how to start a community garden and how to keep growing it.

Fabulous Porta Potties from BRIAN'S PORTA POTTIES
Traffic Cones from GRAHAM
Generator and Traffic Cones from ELLIS DON
Minerature Horses and wagon from MACDONALD MINERATURE HORSES
Old Fashioned Toss Games from ALLLIANCE ENTERTAINMENT
Buns - THE CARRIAGE HOUSE INN
Buns - MCGAVIN'S
Tables/Chairs/Benches/sundries/ - LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOUR
GENERATOR #2 - ANDY POLDAAS
Flowers on the new raised beds - LINDA BERRY and SHARON POLDAAS
Pressure Washer and Paint - BASELINE PAINTING
Pressure Washer #2 - VICTORIA AND ROB
Bench Boards and Mural on Bench - CATHERINE JAMES
Paint & Mentoring emerging artists - SYLVIA PROCHOWNIK
60 traffic cones-GRAHAM CONSTRUCTION

I am so sorry if I missed anyone - each of you was instrumental in making the day happen. Please let me know if I did.

To everyone in the community that came out - this day was for you! We hope you had fun. We wanted to get to know you and for you to get to know us. There would be no mural and no party if you were not there. You are part of a legacy and we hope to see you, your friends and family at Growing Acadia annual event next year. It will be a smaller event - a picnic in the park with some lovely music. Date is TBA.

One last and very important thank you must go out - to the neighbours of the Acadia Community Garden. You gave us your support - 100%. You encouraged us, you believed we could do this and you let us paint a mural on our street. We are so glad to share the street with you. Thank you for your kind words and your encouragement.

Thank you all for a great day.

And now its time for bed! Good night everyone!

JULY 15 CONSULTATION: You are welcome to come to community consultation on Tuesday, July 15th from 7-9 pm and see the rough sketch of the beatiful artwork by local artist Sylvia P. You can also see it on the fence of the garden. We look forward to chatting with you about the upcoming block party and paint the pavement mural project.

HOW? Its through an amazing Soul of the City grant and the amazing work of our incredible charitable partners - the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, located right in Acadia for 51 years, that make this event is happening. We are a very young organziation and could not do an event like this on our own. They are helping the Acadia Community Garden and Art Society grow!

WHY? Why are we doing this? So more people can learn about the Acadia Community Garden and Art Society and feel very welcome to get involved. Many hands makes light work of creating this beautiful outdoor community space. Its also about partnerships - getting to know our neighbours, neighbouring organizations and businesses, and making it possible to develop our green space further for all that come to Acadia.

EVENT AUGUST 9th 2014 11 am - 3:00 pm The event is August 9th and we need the help of amazing, fun volunteers to make the day a success - be the artist helper and help guide all the painters to their section of pavement to paint, or help set up tables, help hand out paper plates and napkins for the free M and M Meats Barbeque! Help monitor a bounce house or the old fashioned games. Its going to be fun. Want to enjoy the day too? No worries, pick up a shift and there will still be lots of time to eat and paint, play and visit your neighbours!

Thank you and hope you can make it out for all the fun and create a lovely legacy artwork for the community - be a part of the first Annual Growing Acadia event!

Please spread the word!

We have left flyers at the houses of neighbours we could not reach.
The project has the support of Calgary Foundation, Calgary Economic Foundation and Soul of the City and the Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative.

4 more beds completed and soil coming on Tuesday!

What an amazing build today!  Andy, Kierra and I thought we were the only ones that were coming and throughout the build at least 15 other gardeners, including four amazing community youth) showed up and helped.  It was so inspiring!  Thank you everyone!

We met a wonderful group of young people growing beautiful tomato plants in their greenhouse.

We also met a lovely woman from Kazakhstan that is going to help us with the the ethnic community bed. She is researching the seeds that her mother planted in Kazakshstan when she was young for us.  If you have ideas for our ethnic edible experimental bed, it will be ready to plant after the next build.

We will be building more beds in the next couple of weeks - two community beds to share with everyone in the community - the ethnic edibles bed and the herbs and lettuces bed!  We will also get started on the composting system!

We started at 9 am and finished around 1:30 pm.  What a great day in the sun!

Thank you to the Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative Grant for making the compost and shared community bed build possible!

If you have a great idea, please talk to them and see if you can apply for a grant for your great idea too!

------Soul of the City Grant ------
Wow! Laurie and I presented last night at Soul of the City event. Our project, with our fabulous partners, The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour is Acadia Grows: Art and Garden Come Together!
There were 7 other incredible projects presented and we thought it would be so hard to choose the five winners. Its was inspiring to hear all their project ideas!
We didn't make it to the top 5....but at the end, Calgary Economic Development announced that all the projects were so compelling that they felt all 8 should be funded!
So.... we are delighted to announce that, with our partners, The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, we are hosting a fabulous community block party at the garden and inviting all that come to help paint a multicultural mural. We are planning for August 9th. Thank you Soul of the City! Thank you Calgary Economic Development!
More details to come soon! Thank you to everyone that supported us in this project and encouraged us to try!

Happy New Year!

Acadia Community Gardeners - we received this lovely invite from Joanne of the Queensland Garden Club. Joanne did an awesome presentation for us in November on Winter Sowing.

"Just wanted to remind you that members of the Acadia Community Garden group are welcome to attend the Queensland Garden Club’s talk this Wednesday. The focus will be tips on growing Veggies in Calgary, Seed Starting and I will do a short demo on Winter Sowing. The first two topics will be covered by two other ladies in our club, so you guys wouldn’t have to listen to me again.

Our meetings start at Wed, January 8 at 7 pm at the Queensland Community Center, 649 Queensland Drive S.E."

Its free to attend our first meeting free and we are welcome to join for $10.00 annual fee.

Thank you to the Queensland Garden Club for this generous invitation!
